Our Top Tips for Rest & Self-Care
Sometimes life feels like a wild ride on a high speed carousel, spinning wildly out of control. In this age of information overload, fast-paced change, and constant accessibility through technology, we all need to find a little time to step back, rest, and recharge. Self-care is a wonderful way to hit the reset button so you can take on life's challenges with fresh energy.
Ironically, during stressful times when you need this TLC the most, it may seem like there’s just no time to do any of the things that you know would most nurture your body and soul. A self-care plan can help you stay proactive by building this loving practice into your everyday routine. Simply schedule a few small blocks of time each day to give back to yourself, and the world will become a much more manageable place.
Not sure where to begin? Here are some of our favorite self-care ideas to get you started:
1. Walks in nature
Research shows that spending time in nature is good for your well-being—and it feels wonderful too! As a team of health conscious superfoodies, we have a deep fondness for walking outdoors (in all weather!). It really brings us back in touch with the earth and more in tune with our own humanity. Nature walks don’t require a huge time commitment—even as little as 10 minutes walking on the beach, in the woods, or even just around a tree-lined block can make a huge difference in how you feel.
2. Meditation
Whether you prefer guided meditation or simply focusing on your breath, meditation is terrific for your entire mind and body. As little as five to 10 minutes a day can bring benefits, and you can meditate absolutely anywhere you won’t be disturbed. There’s nothing mysterious about meditation, and there are countless ways to do it. If you’re brand new to this practice, you may want to give this basic method a try:
- Sit or lie comfortably.
- Gently close your eyes.
- Just breathe naturally.
- Observe the rhythm of your breath without trying to change it in any way, noticing how your body moves with the inhalation and exhalation.
- If your attention wanders, simply return your focus to your breath.
- Try this for a few minutes to start, then gradually work up to longer sessions as your concentration improves.
3. Catch some z’s
There’s nothing like restful sleep to help us feel rejuvenated and revitalized. Quality sleep has phenomenal benefits for your health and well-being, so be sure to make it a priority and schedule enough time each night to get the perfect amount of slumber for your unique body. 4. Long baths
Whether it’s to ease tired muscles, savor a good book, or to simply practice mindfulness, there’s nothing more relaxing than soaking in a hot bath. The trick to finding time for this delicious experience is to plan ahead—even if it has to be way ahead. This may mean finding a sitter for the kids or scheduling a few hours off from work. But once you sink into that steamy tranquil water, all your planning will be well worth it.
5. Unplug
When was the last time you totally lost yourself for hours without the distraction of a ringing phone, email, text messages, breaking news, or social media notifications? Technology makes our world better in so many ways, but being constantly plugged in can feel extremely overstimulating, exhausting, and out of control. That’s why if you only try one of these self-care tips, we hope you make it this one! No matter how resistant you feel (and we get it—technology has a pull as strong as the moon!). try to take an hour or two—or if you’re brave enough, a whole day—to treat yourself to the complete freedom of disconnecting. After the initial impulse to go online and check things passes, a stillness will set in, your thoughts will slow down, and life will feel connected in a whole different and more authentic way .
6. Tune into your inner wisdom
Every one of us has an intuition that can guide us towards healing, well-being and happiness. These practices can indeed help, but ultimately you are the captain of your vessel.
