What Is a Superfood?
Superfoods have inspired a great deal of excitement in recent years, but these natural foods have actually been treasured by indigenous cultures for countless millennia. And sadly, although revered by many, this special category of foods is often completely misunderstood. That’s why it’s time to shed some light on superfoods and nutrition in general—while dispelling some common myths in the process.
Here at Sari Foods we believe in a whole-food, plant-based diet that’s naturally high in nutrients. Inspired by the diets that people around the world have thrived on for thousands of years, we favor a way of eating based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes—while reducing (or eliminating) our intake of meat (including chicken and fish), dairy products, and eggs, as well as processed and highly refined foods like bleached flour and refined sugar. This diet base provides the optimum environment for the introduction of superfoods.
What Superfoods Are
By definition, superfoods are low-calorie and nutrient-dense, meaning they pack a lot of punch for their weight as far as goodness goes. Some of the superfoods we love best include spirulina, acerola cherries, kale, collard greens, acai berries, turmeric, maca, wheatgrass, and garlic. Recent concerns over growing conditions and soil quality highlight the fact that it’s now more important than ever to focus on this type of organic, non-fortified food, since superfoods provide so many of the important macronutrients and micronutrients your body craves—including essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants we can’t make for ourselves.
What Superfoods Aren't
Misunderstanding about the power of superfoods abounds, and some people have even come to believe a single superfood can somehow magically compensate for an otherwise unhealthy diet and lifestyle. This is unfortunate because as good for you as superfoods are, they were never designed by nature to work in isolation.
Superfoods truly shine when they’re enjoyed as part of an already nutritionally balanced diet. That's not to say that a spoonful of spirulina isn't going to offer some nutritional value in a diet full of processed or refined foods—but using superfoods this way simply doesn’t tap their full potential. There’s no getting around the fact that enriching a healthy, organic, and plant-based diet with superfoods is the optimal way to utilize all that bioavailable goodness.
